Paintings- About PICHWAI

The word Pichwai derives from the Sanskrit words pich meaning back and wais meaning hanging. These paintings are cloth paintings hung behind the image of the Hindu god Shrinathji. Pichoi is a backdrop hung behind the Lord in the inner-shrine.
This comes from a Mongol / Persian tradition of having their best carpets displayed by being hung as backdrops to impress visitors. Turk, Afghani and Persian invaders brought this tradition to north India. During the Mughal rule, carpets were replaced by rich wall hangings, either embroided or painted, to represent landscapes, floral arrangements, or abstract designs.

This fashion soon caught on as it was an easy and an effective way of changing the appearance of a room with minimal effort. The use of pichoi also increased and greater imagination was used to create dramatic effect by sometimes using complementary or contrasting colours. More painted and embroided pichoies came to be used, often commissioned by leaders of the sect or rich devotees who wanted to commomerate specific occasions. Each contributing to our understanding and appreciation of the evolution of the sect, and its philosophical ideas. Painted pichoies are used on special occasions or during festivals.

Each Rajput kingdom evolved a distinct style, but with certain common features. Rajput paintings depict a number of themes, events of epics like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, Krishna’s life, beautiful landscapes, and humans. In the last decades of the 16th Century Rajput art schools began to develop distinctive styles combining indigenous as well as foreign influences (Persian, Mughal, Chinese, European) into unique styles. Rajasthani painting consists of four principal schools that have within them several artistic styles and substyles that can be traced to the various princely states that patronised these artists. The four principal schools are as follows:

  • The Mewar school that contains the Chavand, Nathdwara, Devgarh, Udaipur and Sawar styles of painting
  • The Marwar school comprising the Kishangarh, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Nagaur, Pali and Ghanerao styles
  • The Hadoti school with the Kota, Bundi and Jhalawar styles.
